Nutella is more than just a dessert – for many, it’s a nostalgic taste of childhood. Despite today’s abundance of sweets on store shelves, this chocolate-hazelnut spread remains a favorite treat among both kids and adults. However, store-bought Nutella isn’t exactly healthy, as it often contains additives like artificial flavors, stabilizers, and preservatives. If you want to treat yourself and your loved ones to a delicious and healthy Nutella alternative, the best solution is to make it yourself. Luckily, you don’t need much time, skill, or rare ingredients to create your own homemade Nutella.
A great variation of the recipe includes hazelnuts – this gives the spread a rich aroma and a delicate nutty aftertaste. Hazelnuts are packed with vitamins A, E, K, PP, and B-complex, as well as minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iodine, iron, zinc, and more. Eating hazelnuts regularly can support heart and vascular health, improve memory and cognitive function, and boost immunity.
CraftOil – a Ukrainian brand specializing in cold-pressed oils – offers a wide range of natural products, including premium organic hazelnuts. Our nuts are raw, untreated, and certified for quality. Ingredients for homemade Nutella with hazelnuts
To prepare Nutella, you need:
- 200 ml whole milk;
- 100 g sugar;
- 1 tbsp flour or cornstarch;
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder;
- 50 g hazelnuts;
- A pinch of salt (optional);
- 50 g butter;
Step-by-step instructions
In a saucepan with a thick bottom, combine all the dry ingredients: flour (or starch), sugar, salt, and cocoa powder. Gradually pour in the milk while constantly stirring to prevent lumps. Stir until the mixture is completely smooth.
Place the saucepan over low heat. Once the mixture starts to boil, add the butter and stir thoroughly.
After 3–4 minutes, remove from heat. Blend the hazelnuts in a food processor or blender until finely ground. Add the ground hazelnuts to the warm chocolate mixture and stir until well combined.
Transfer the Nutella to a clean container. Once cooled, it’s ready to enjoy. This homemade hazelnut chocolate spread can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Recipe tips:
You can substitute hazelnuts with walnuts, cashews, or almonds. Replace regular wheat flour with almond flour for added nutritional value and a subtly sweet aroma. Almond flour is a great thickener and adds a gourmet twist to your DIY Nutella.
