Ketchup is one of the most universal and beloved condiments that pairs perfectly with meat dishes, side meals, and even hot sandwiches like hot dogs or burgers. A great and much healthier alternative to store-bought ketchup is homemade ketchup, made from ripe tomatoes and enriched with spices and herbs.

One of the main benefits of DIY ketchup is that you can tailor the recipe to your taste—adjusting the amount of salt, sugar, or spices. Unlike mass-produced options, homemade organic ketchup contains no stabilizers, artificial thickeners, flavor enhancers, or other questionable additives.

Homemade ketchup

An innovative way to enhance both the flavor and nutritional value of your homemade ketchup is to add edible hemp seeds. These tiny seeds add a subtle, nutty, slightly spicy note and bring impressive health benefits. Hemp seeds are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, magnesium, iron, manganese, and a range of other minerals. Regular consumption of hemp seeds helps regulate heart rhythm, improve blood flow, promote restful sleep, and reduce stress.

Ingredients for homemade ketchup with hemp seeds

To prepare a rich, slightly spicy ketchup with hemp seeds, you’ll need:

  • 2 tablespoons sunflower oil;
  • 1 medium onion;
  • 4 garlic cloves;
  • 1 tablespoon salt;
  • 8 tablespoons tomato paste (or 6 medium tomatoes);
  • 2 teaspoons curry powder;
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder;
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper;
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar;
  • ½ cup sugar;
  • 1 bay leaf;
  • 2 teaspoons hemp seeds;

Step-by-step instructions

Prepare the vegetables: Peel and rinse the onion and garlic. Finely chop them or blend in a food processor.

Prepare the tomatoes (if not using paste): Wash them, blanch with boiling water, peel the skins, and blend the flesh.

Place a heavy-bottomed saucepan or cast-iron pot over medium heat. Pour in the sunflower oil. Once hot, add onion and garlic. Sauté until fragrant and golden.

Add the tomato paste or blended tomatoes. Cook for around 5 minutes. Stir in the vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar, curry, mustard powder, and bay leaf. Simmer the mixture over low heat for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add hemp seeds, stir well, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Let the ketchup cool slightly, then blend until smooth. Serve chilled for a fresh, tangy flavor—or warm as a savory sauce for meats.

Tips:

To make the ketchup more aromatic, try adding a pinch of caraway powder in addition to mustard.

You can find organic mustard and caraway flour, as well as sunflower oil and other cold-pressed products at CraftOil – a Ukrainian online store specializing in artisanal foods and certified oil-making equipment.
