The cost of vegetable oils worldwide continues to increase. According to World Bank price data, palm oil prices have reached a record level compared to March 2025, surpassing a psychological threshold and strengthening at a multi-year high.
During the reporting period, the price of palm oil rose by 3.7% compared to January. The cost per ton increased from $1,004.66 to $1,041.60. A similarly high level was last recorded in March 2024, when one ton of palm oil cost $1,067.60.
Industry experts link the rise in global vegetable oil prices not only to seasonal factors but also to increasing global demand.
How vegetable oil prices have changed
Palm oil is not the only oil that has seen a significant price increase. Other oils that have risen include:
- Soybean oil price increased by 10.1% in one month, reaching $1,270.47 per ton;
- Peanut oil price hit its highest level since summer 2024, rising by 6.2% to $1,829.34 per ton;
- Coconut oil price grew by 2.8%, reaching $2,259.13 per ton. The demand for coconut oil continues to grow due to its wide use in the food industry (chocolate production, snacks, ice cream, baked goods), as well as in pharmaceuticals (vitamins and dietary supplements) and cosmetics (skin and hair care products);
- Sunflower oil price (including delivery from Ukraine) reached $1,327.50 per ton in March, which is $42 higher than in winter (+3.27%);
Analysts believe that current vegetable oil market trends may impact the cost of products in the confectionery and fat-and-oil industries over the next 2–3 months.
Reasons for the increase in vegetable oil prices
The rise in vegetable oil prices is driven by several factors such as raw material shortages caused by unusually dry weather last summer, increased production costs, higher logistics and transportation expenses, rising import duties linked to changes in global banking credit policies.
Despite rising prices, plant-based oils remain in high demand due to their essential role in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
In recent years, cold-pressed oils and unrefined vegetable oils have become especially popular. These oils are not subjected to refining, deodorization, or freezing processes.
They are considered «live products» rich in vitamins and minerals, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and biologically active compounds.
