Homemade mustard is not just a popular condiment but a truly delicious addition that transforms meat, fish, and even vegetable dishes into real delicacies. It adds a bold, spicy aroma and a sharp, tangy flavor. Moreover, mustard is an excellent healthy alternative to calorie-dense and fatty mayonnaise-based sauces.
Mustard is also well known for its health benefits. Crushed mustard seeds contain essential minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Calcium and potassium support the musculoskeletal system, while magnesium helps these minerals absorb properly and also lowers levels of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, reducing the risk of serious conditions such as atherosclerosis.
You can easily buy mustard sauce in a store, but making homemade mustard from mustard powder is a much better option. This way, you get a 100% natural product without preservatives or stabilizers, and you can easily adjust the level of spiciness to your taste.
CraftOil offers fresh, organic mustard flour made from yellow mustard seed press cake, milled at the company’s own certified mills using special food-grade stainless steel. This mustard powder is perfect not only for making mustard sauce but also for DIY cosmetic masks, body wraps, therapeutic compresses, and foot baths.

Ingredients
To prepare classic homemade mustard sauce, you will need:
- 100 g mustard powder;
- 250–270 g water;
- 1 teaspoon salt;
- 2 tablespoons sugar;
- 1 tablespoon 9% vinegar;
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil;
Step-by-step instructions
Heat the water to approximately 70–80°C (158–176°F)—do not boil. Gradually add the mustard powder while stirring continuously and vigorously. Mix until completely smooth and free of lumps.
Add salt, sugar, and vinegar, and stir again until fully combined. Finally, pour in the vegetable oil, mix thoroughly, and leave the mustard to cool and infuse for at least 1 hour, preferably 2 hours.
Store the finished mustard in a tightly sealed container in the main compartment of the refrigerator.

Notes & tips:
For a richer aroma, prepare the sauce using raw mustard oil instead of regular vegetable oil. For a unique flavor, replace water with pickle brine or tomato juice. Mustard made with milk has a milder, smoother taste. You can enhance the flavor by adding minced garlic, finely chopped fresh or dried herbs, ground black pepper, cumin, or even freshly grated or blended horseradish root.
Mustard oil, along with many other vegetable oils and flours of various types, is always available at CraftOil, a store specializing in craft food products and oil-making equipment. You can also order white, yellow, and black mustard seeds, perfect for making French mustard, as well as for use in marinades, brines and sauces.
