Plant-based oils are widely used not only in cooking but also in traditional and official medicine, as well as in cosmetology. They nourish and moisturize the skin, strengthen hair, and help solve many aesthetic problems. The main thing is to choose the right oil and use it regularly.
One of the lesser-known but incredibly effective skincare products is hydrophilic oil. Its name literally means «oil that loves water». This product can be used as a makeup remover oil (even for waterproof cosmetics) or as an alternative to micellar water.
Composition and features of hydrophilic oil
Hydrophilic cleansing oils became globally popular thanks to Asian makeup artists, who still consider them one of the best solutions for gentle skin cleansing.
The formula of hydrophilic oil includes not only plant-based oil but also an emulsifier. Unlike creams or lotions, it contains no water. The emulsifier is a surfactant that allows the oil to bind with water and wash away impurities.
Modern hydrophilic oils may also contain esters, fruit acids, mineral oils, and other beneficial components for the skin. When applied, they do not clog pores or create an airtight film, allowing the skin to «breathe».
Another important advantage is cost-effectiveness. Just 3–4 drops of cleansing oil are enough to remove makeup, while you’d need 3–4 times more toner or cleansing milk.
Hydrophilic oil is a multifunctional skincare product. Cleansing is just one of its many uses.
How to use hydrophilic oil
«Water-loving oils» can be applied in different ways:
- For facial cleansing. Perfect for dry, sensitive, or irritation-prone skin. Mix a few drops of hydrophilic oil with water, gently massage into the face (forehead, nose, cheeks, even around the eyes), then rinse;
- For washing hair. Since it contains no sulfates or phosphates, it does not damage hair structure or dry out the scalp. 8–10 drops are enough for medium-length hair;
- For intimate hygiene. Hydrophilic oil can replace gels or foams — it does not harm delicate mucous membranes or disrupt microflora;
- For homemade beauty masks. Add a few drops of oil to DIY face or hand masks, or use it as a natural body lotion;
Interestingly, a similar moisturizing effect can be achieved by applying pure raw oils (like almond, flaxseed, or apricot kernel oil) on slightly damp skin. Each oil contains unique vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, making it valuable for skin health.
