Nuts are an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, macronutrients, and fatty acids, which are vital for the proper functioning of the human body.

Peanuts, almonds, cashews, and other types of nuts are widely recommended by nutritionists and dietitians. They have a positive effect on the brain, nervous system, heart, and blood vessels. However, in some cases, eating nuts can cause harm or trigger a negative reaction in the body. Not everyone can enjoy them at any time.

Who should temporarily avoid nuts

Avoiding nuts

Alongside their high nutritional value, nuts are also very calorie-dense. That’s why individuals with excess weight or those on a diet should consume them in moderation.

In addition, it’s best to temporarily avoid walnuts, peanuts, or pistachios if you are dealing with one of the following health conditions:

  • Gastritis or pancreatitis during an acute phase. The fiber and plant-based fats in nuts may irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms;
  • Post-surgery recovery involving the small intestine. The rough, fibrous structure of nuts may damage fresh surgical stitches;
  • Acute or chronic throat and respiratory infections, including tonsillitis, bronchitis, or whooping cough. Swallowing nuts can irritate the throat lining and intensify coughing;

People suffering from serious kidney conditions, such as acute pyelonephritis, should avoid sweet almonds or eat them with extreme caution.

Those who are prone to obesity should stay away from macadamia nuts, as a single nut can contain up to 1,000 kcal.

Many types of nuts are common allergens. People with food allergies should make sure their body does not negatively react to hazelnuts or pistachios before consuming them.

Peanuts are the most frequent cause of nut allergies, while cashews are considered hypoallergenic and are often safer for sensitive individuals.

Even though walnuts are known for their benefits for memory and mental focus, consuming them in excess can have the opposite effect — leading to headaches, reduced concentration, and other neurological symptoms.

Should you completely stop eating nuts?

In most cases, giving up nuts is only a temporary measure. Once the acute phase of an illness has passed and health improves, nuts can be gradually reintroduced into the diet.

As for allergies, even people with very sensitive immune systems are usually allergic to specific types of nuts only. In such cases, it’s perfectly acceptable — and recommended — to replace them with other nuts that do not trigger a negative immune response.
