Castor oil – also known as ricinus oil – is a well-known product that has recently been unfairly overlooked. Most people know it good for joints, as a natural remedy for constipation or as a treatment to boost hair growth and give it shine and thickness.
But beyond that, castor oil is one of the most underrated natural skincare products. It can help remove blackheads (comedones), lighten dark spots and pigmentation, and even smooth out fine lines and wrinkles thanks to its deep moisturizing effect.
What makes castor oil special for skincare
Each plant-based oil has a unique chemical composition, and castor oil is no exception. About 80% of it is made up of ricinoleic acid, giving it a thick, honey-like texture.
Because of its density, pure castor oil is difficult to apply directly. It doesn’t spread easily on hair and forms a heavy film on the skin that may feel uncomfortable. That’s why it’s usually blended with other carrier oils like linseed, poppy seed, almond, or flaxseed oil for skincare and hair treatments.
To increase the effect, you can add a few drops of essential oils – but the concentration should not exceed 2%, as high amounts may irritate the skin.
How to use castor oil on the face and body
Castor oil is not suitable for daily use. For hair strengthening, mix ½ teaspoon with your usual conditioner. For skin hydration, use it in masks once every 8–10 days.
Tips for safe and effective use:
- Patch test first: before using castor oil, check for allergies. Apply 1–2 drops on the inner elbow and observe for 24 hours. If there’s no irritation, redness, or itching, it’s safe to use;
- Under-eye care: mix 1 drop of castor oil with ½ tsp of almond or flaxseed oil. Gently dab under the eyes (not directly on the eyelids) and leave for 15 minutes. Wipe off the excess with a lint-free tissue;
- Remove blackheads naturally: сombine castor oil with any base oil in a 1:1 ratio, warm slightly (to around 40°C), and gently massage the face for 15–20 minutes (avoiding the eye area). Rinse with warm water and cleanser, then apply moisturizer;
- Avoid using before bed: bue to its dense consistency, castor oil may cause puffiness if applied right before sleeping;
- Lip care: a blend of 1 drop of castor oil and 2 drops of coconut oil makes a great natural lip balm – ideal for chapped or dry lips, and it gives a glossy finish without smudging;
- Brighten freckles and dark spots: mix 3 drops of castor oil with 3 drops of flaxseed oil, 1 drop of lemon essential oil, and ½ tsp of white clay. Add water if needed. Apply to clean skin, leave for 15 minutes, then rinse. Repeat every 8–10 days for best results;
