Bee products are widely used in herbal medicine, naturopathy, home cosmetics, and even everyday household applications. Honey, beeswax, and propolis can be consumed internally and are also used to make various ointments, creams, infusions, and other products. Bee pollen, also known as bee-collected pollen or pollen pellets, is no less valuable. It is a natural concentrate of biologically active compounds, vitamins, minerals, and other substances that are important for the normal and healthy functioning of the human body.
What are the benefits of bee pollen?
Bee pollen has a rich chemical and nutritional composition, which determines many of its beneficial properties. A 100-gram serving contains approximately:
- Protein, including essential amino acids – 30–40 g;
- Carbohydrates, including plant fiber and simple sugars – about 45 g;
- Fats – up to 10 g;
- B vitamins (B1, B2, B5, B6, B9) – approximately 1.5 mg;
- Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) – up to 205 mg;
- Vitamin A – up to 212 mg;
- Vitamin D – about 3 mcg;
- Vitamin E (tocopherol) – approximately 170 mg;
- Vitamin H (biotin) – up to 100 mcg;
Bee pollen also contains smaller amounts of vitamins K and PP (niacin), as well as minerals such as magnesium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, sulfur, and calcium. In addition, pollen contains flavonoids, phytohormones, and other plant compounds involved in various metabolic processes.
Bee pollen is traditionally used to support overall vitality, immune function, and recovery after periods of illness or physical stress. Regular consumption may also help support endurance and normal cognitive function.
How to use bee pollen
The appropriate amount and duration of bee pollen consumption depend on the intended purpose.
For colds and flu, a traditional approach is to mix 1 teaspoon of bee pollen with an equal amount of honey and slowly dissolve the mixture in the mouth 3–4 times a day.
To support cardiovascular health, the same mixture can traditionally be consumed once a day, approximately 15–20 minutes before a meal.
One teaspoon of bee pollen dissolved in 250 ml of kefir is traditionally used as a nutritional drink to support memory and concentration. It can be consumed a couple of hours before bedtime. If desired, the drink can be lightly sweetened with honey or sugar.
Another traditional method is to mix one slightly heaped teaspoon of bee pollen with 100 ml of boiling water, let it steep for approximately 30 minutes, and drink it like tea. This preparation is traditionally consumed to support the body’s natural defenses.
Contraindications and precautions when taking bee pollen
Like any other food or bee product, bee pollen may not be suitable for everyone. People with an exacerbation of peptic ulcer disease, severe kidney or liver conditions, or stage 2–3 hypertension should avoid consuming it without first consulting a healthcare professional.
People with allergies to pollen or other bee products should also exercise particular caution, as bee pollen may cause allergic reactions.
How to choose high-quality bee pollen
The quality of bee pollen affects its nutritional value and overall properties. Fresh, natural bee pollen typically has a light-yellow color, a loose, granular consistency, and no large clumps or stuck-together particles. It has a mildly sweet taste without a pronounced bitter aftertaste.
High-quality pollen has a delicate floral and honey-like aroma, sometimes reminiscent of bird cherry or acacia blossoms.
The quality of bee pollen depends on proper drying and storage, as well as the environmental conditions around the apiary and hygiene inside the hives. One of the easiest and most comfortable hive materials for bees is polyurethane foam (PU/PUR), an inert polymer material with excellent thermal and water-insulating properties.
CraftOil polyurethane foam hives – a practical solution for apiaries
