The popularity and demand for plant-based milk have increased dramatically in recent years. This trend is driven not only by the growing interest in vegetarianism, veganism, and healthy lifestyle choices, but also by the decreasing availability of high-quality cow’s and goat’s milk.
A great alternative to animal milk is sesame milk. It features a delicate, mild taste with subtle nutty notes and a rich vitamin and mineral profile, making it extremely beneficial for overall health.
Health benefits of sesame milk
Sesame milk made from whole, raw sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) contains a powerful combination of nutrients:
- Vitamin C – a strong immune booster that enhances the body’s response to viruses and bacteria;
- Vitamin A (Retinol) – an antioxidant that protects cells from free radicals and supports eye health;
- B Vitamins (B-complex) – water-soluble nutrients that support brain function, nervous system health, and energy metabolism;
- Vitamin PP (Niacin / Vitamin B3) – essential for converting carbohydrates into energy, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, and supporting amino acid production;
- Calcium – a key mineral for strong bones and cartilage. Sesame milk is often considered a natural dairy-free calcium source;
- Iron (Ferrum) – required for red blood cell production and oxygen transport throughout the body;
- Sesamin and Sesamolin – rare antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and slow oxidative processes;
- Omega-9 fatty acids – monounsaturated fats that regulate lipid metabolism, strengthen cell membranes, and support skin barrier function;
Like cow’s or goat’s milk, sesame seed milk can be consumed as a beverage or used in cooking. It is also valued in cosmetology, herbal therapy, and naturopathy due to its natural nutritional profile.
How to make sesame milk at home
Ingredients (for 1 liter of homemade sesame milk):
- 200 g raw sesame seeds (white or black);
- 1 liter water;
For prepare rinse the sesame seeds thoroughly. Soak them in cool water for 7–8 hours. Drain and blend the soaked seeds until smooth. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth or a fine sieve, squeezing well. Combine the extracted liquid with 1 liter of boiled water.
You can sweeten your homemade sesame milk with honey, sugar, stevia, or other natural sweeteners. For those avoiding refined sugar, chopped dates make an excellent alternative.
