The delicate, sweet, and refined fragrance of jasmine is one of the most beloved in perfumery. It gives perfumes and eau de toilette an irresistibly appealing note. Jasmine has long been cherished not only in the world of high-end fragrances but also in aromatherapy, naturopathy, and natural skincare. Jasmine essential oil is known for its positive effects on emotional well-being as well as on skin and hair health. It’s rightfully considered one of the rarest and most expensive essential oils in the world.

The history of jasmine oil

Jasmine essential oil is derived from the freshly picked and slightly dried flowers of the jasmine plant. This fast-growing shrub features a rounded crown and elongated oval leaves. Native to Kashmir, India, jasmine was brought to Europe during the period of Arab influence. Later, jasmine bushes were widely cultivated across the Mediterranean, where they became one of the most decorative and desirable garden plants.

The first to successfully extract jasmine oil were French perfumers, and this happened relatively recently — in the 19th century. Since jasmine blooms only briefly, French fragrance makers sought a way to preserve its enchanting aroma so they could create jasmine perfumes year-round.

Interestingly, in ancient China, diluted jasmine oil was used to wash eyes, and it was also used to treat scurvy and rheumatism, as well as to cleanse the blood and lymph. In Armenia, infusions made from jasmine flowers, leaves, and young shoots were used as a remedy for bronchitis and asthma.

Jasmine oil is widely used in aromatherapy for its calming and relaxing effects. It helps ease migraines, relieves stress, and improves sleep quality.

In natural cosmetics, jasmine oil is added to skincare and haircare products. It is especially beneficial for mature or very dry skin, thanks to its cell-regenerating properties.

A massage using jasmine oil diluted in a carrier oil at a ratio of 1:10 effectively relieves muscle tension, reduces fatigue, and combats apathy.

When applied to the scalp, jasmine essential oil strengthens hair follicles and helps prevent excessive hair loss.

Why lasmine oil is so expensive

Today, jasmine essential oil is made using the extraction method. This results in two products: jasmine concrete (the initial extract) and jasmine absolute – an alcohol-soluble substance rich in volatile aromatic compounds.

The high cost of jasmine oil is largely due to the challenges of harvesting. Jasmine blossoms are picked exclusively by hand before sunrise, and must be processed within just a few hours. The oil yield is extremely low – only about 0.1%, which means a vast amount of raw material is needed to produce even a small quantity of oil.

At home, jasmine oil can be made through infusion. About 40–50 jasmine blossoms should be soaked in 100 grams of a neutral-smelling base oil to preserve the floral scent. The mixture is left to infuse for 2–2.5 weeks, after which it is strained and stored in a dark glass container in a cool, sun-protected place.
