Scandinavian cuisine has much in common with Ukrainian cooking. It also features many simple yet hearty and nutritious dishes made from meat and fish. The flavor, aroma, and even the health benefits of a delicacy depend greatly on the sauce served with fish. Fans of northern culinary traditions will surely appreciate this Scandinavian sauce for fish. It pairs perfectly with both sea and river fish varieties, transforming an ordinary fried fillet into something that can impress even the most demanding gourmets.
To add spicy and aromatic notes, it’s best to prepare the sauce with mustard oil. Thanks to its high smoke point, mustard oil easily withstands heat, making it ideal not only for sauces but also for frying and baking.
Cold-pressed mustard seeds produce an oil rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, K, and many B-group vitamins, as well as magnesium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals. This rich physicochemical profile makes mustard oil a true superfood. Regular consumption supports cardiovascular health, strengthens the immune system, and helps balance lipid metabolism — promoting weight control and preventing the buildup of visceral fat.
CraftOil offers fresh, aromatic, premium-quality mustard oil with a subtle spicy note. We press it only after an order is placed, bottle it immediately in branded glass containers, and seal it securely using professional equipment. Try our CraftOil mustard oil, and we guarantee it will become one of your favorites.
Ingredients for a scandinavian fish sauce
To prepare this flavorful Nordic mustard oil sauce for fish, you will need:
- 5–7 sprigs of parsley;
- 5–7 sprigs of dill;
- 1 lemon;
- ½ tbsp liquid honey (or maple syrup);
- ½ tsp salt;
- ½ tsp ground black pepper;
- 1 tbsp mustard oil;
Step-by-step preparation
Wash the lemon, pat it dry, and cut it in half. Set one half aside — you won’t need it. Squeeze the juice from the other half using your hands or a citrus juicer. Rinse the dill and parsley thoroughly and chop them finely. Remove thick stems, using only the leaves and tender shoots.
If the honey has crystallized, warm it in the microwave on «Defrost» mode or melt it in a water bath.
In a small bowl, combine the honey, mustard oil, lemon juice, and chopped herbs. Add salt and pepper, then mix everything well. The sauce is ready to use immediately, but for a richer aroma, let it sit for 15–20 minutes.
Notes:
If you enjoy spicy and aromatic dishes, use 2 tablespoons of mustard oil instead of one. In addition to dill and parsley, you can add basil, cilantro, or any herbs you prefer. Mustard oil and certified mustard seeds of various varieties are available for order from CraftOil.
