Porridge has always been a filling, nutritious, and therefore extremely popular side dish that perfectly complements meat, fish, and vegetable meals. While buckwheat, rice, barley, and millet porridge are well known worldwide, hemp porridge is rarely mentioned today — and quite unfairly. Hemp porridge is not only delicious but also a highly nutritious superfood, rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, micro- and macroelements, and phytonutrients.
Interestingly, among our ancestors — the ancient slavs — the word «porridge» originally referred specifically to boiled hemp seeds.
Hemp seeds (as well as flour made from their press cake) contain easily digestible plant-based protein with all 8 essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, essential minerals: potassium, calcium, iron, manganese and phosphorus. They also contain chlorophyll — a natural analogue of hemoglobin — which plays an important role in blood formation and overall body vitality.
Regular consumption of hemp products helps to build and maintain muscle mass, improve digestion and relieve constipation, reduce bloating and gas, improve the condition of skin, hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and nails, strengthen the immune system and increase overall endurance and energy levels.

Ingredients
For a hearty and flavorful hemp porridge (4 servings), you will need:
- 300 g hemp seeds;
- 600 g water;
- ½ tsp salt;
- ½ tsp sugar;
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for dressing);
Step-by-step cooking instructions
Rinse the hemp seeds thoroughly (preferably twice). Cover with water and place on medium heat. Bring to a boil, then add salt and sugar and stir well. Reduce heat and cook for 20–25 minutes, until tender. Let the porridge rest briefly, then drain excess water. Add vegetable oil and mix well.
Serve immediately after cooking. This versatile side dish pairs perfectly with chicken, pork, beef, river and sea fish, and seafood.
Notes & Tips:
For a softer, creamier texture, soak hemp seeds in lukewarm water for 30–40 minutes before cooking. During cooking, add 2–3 tablespoons of milk or cream. Using cold-pressed hemp seed oil as a dressing gives the porridge a rich aroma and unique flavor. You may also use corn oil, sunflower oil, camelina oil, or sesame oil. All these oils are available at CraftOil, a Ukrainian online store offering healthy natural foods and certified equipment for cold-pressed oil production.
