Lethargy, apathy, drowsiness, unexplained headaches and even muscle pain, as well as difficulties with concentration, absent-mindedness, and brain fog — these are fairly common symptoms familiar to most people today. If such symptoms persist not just for a day or a week, but for a longer period, they may indicate myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), a complex multisystem condition that does not simply resolve on its own.

What is chronic fatigue syndrome?

Fatigue

At first glance, the symptoms described above may resemble vitamin deficiencies or a seasonal decrease in energy levels. However, unlike these conditions, chronic fatigue is not tied to a particular season and does not necessarily depend on the level of physical activity. As for deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, they may intensify the symptoms, further impairing well-being and overall health.

The differences between CFS, ordinary overexertion, and nutrient deficiencies include the following:

  • Extreme exhaustion occurs even after minimal physical activity;
  • Muscles may ache without any apparent cause;
  • Mental tasks that previously required little time or effort become extremely difficult or even impossible to complete;
  • A persistent lack of energy continues for more than six months, regardless of sleep patterns, daily routine, and other factors;

This condition was first described by George Beard in 1869, when he called it “neurasthenia” and attributed it to exhaustion of the central nervous system. Later, in 1988, a working group from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, led by Stephen Straus and Henry Holmes, together with Harvard researcher Anthony Komaroff, studied the symptoms and manifestations of chronic fatigue. Their research demonstrated that the condition was not simply the result of an Epstein-Barr virus infection. The findings were published in an article available through the National Library of Medicine.

Modern genetic and biochemical research suggests that this syndrome has neuroimmune and, in part, genetic components, while adverse external influences may exacerbate its symptoms.

Prevention of chronic fatigue syndrome

It is impossible to completely eliminate the risk of developing this condition because scientists do not yet know its precise underlying cause. However, it is possible to reduce the likelihood of chronic exhaustion and low energy levels. To achieve this, it is important to establish a consistent rest schedule, go to bed at the same time each night, and get at least 7.5–8 hours of sleep.

Mental workloads should be alternated with physical activity, allowing the brain to rest while helping maintain muscle tone.

Another important aspect of chronic fatigue syndrome prevention is a proper, nutritious, and balanced diet. A daily diet should include seasonal vegetables, fruits, leafy greens, and unrefined vegetable oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients.

The benefits of plant oils in CFS prevention

People with chronic fatigue syndrome may exhibit elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α and IL-6, which can contribute to feelings of fatigue and physical weakness. Omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in flaxseed and camelina oils, as well as chia seed oil, may influence inflammatory signaling pathways and help regulate the production of these molecules.х запалення, сповільнюючи вироблення даних молекул.

In CFS, mitochondrial function may be impaired, potentially reducing the body’s ability to produce sufficient energy and contributing to general weakness and reduced vitality. Omega-3 and omega-6 lipids are incorporated into cell membranes, helping maintain their flexibility and function, which supports the transport and utilization of essential nutrients.

A recent study published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports showed that omega fatty acids can disrupt lipid rafts — specialized regions of cell membranes — in viruses and bacteria, potentially making them more vulnerable to immune-cell activity.

In addition, lipids from plant-based oils contribute to the maintenance of myelin sheaths surrounding nerves, helping support the transmission of nerve impulses. This may indirectly support brain function and cognitive performance.

CraftOil offers an excellent, regularly updated selection of unrefined, 100% natural, and highly beneficial plant-based oils.
