Weakness, increased fatigue, frequent seemingly unexplained headaches, and reduced concentration are among the most common symptoms of vitamin deficiency, a condition that the vast majority of people are familiar with. However, few people realize that similar symptoms may also indicate hypervitaminosis — an excessive amount of certain vitamins, minerals and trace or macronutrients in the body.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), hypervitaminosis is less common than hypovitaminosis. However, in recent years, it has been diagnosed more frequently due to the growing popularity of dietary supplements (BAAs), pharmaceutical vitamin preparations, and similar products.

Symptoms and negative effects of excess vitamins

Symptoms of excess vitamins

Hypervitaminosis is most often associated with excessive levels of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, because these vitamins can accumulate in body fat and the tissues of certain organs.

An excess of each vitamin can cause different symptoms. In particular:

  • Vitamin A — loss of appetite or a significant decrease in appetite, occasional nausea, and dizziness. Mouth ulcers and increased sensitivity to light may also develop;
  • Vitamin D — arrhythmia, hypertension or frequent blood pressure fluctuations, insomnia, and muscle pain similar to that experienced after physical exertion;
  • Vitamin E — frequent muscle cramps and a decrease in overall body tone, causing fatigue and, in some cases, apathy;
  • Vitamin K — excessive sweating and facial flushing even with minimal physical activity, which may be associated with increased blood viscosity. In addition, this can increase the risk of blood clot formation (thrombosis);

In mild cases of hypervitaminosis, it may be sufficient to stop taking dietary supplements or medications containing the relevant vitamin and temporarily reduce consumption of foods rich in that vitamin.

A severe form of hypervitaminosis requires medical examination and specialized treatment, as it can cause serious disruptions to the functioning of organs and body systems and may even pose a life-threatening risk.

How to prevent hypervitaminosis

To minimize the risk of vitamins and minerals accumulating in the body, it may be advisable to avoid unnecessary dietary supplements and other pharmaceutical products and instead maintain a balanced diet that provides the nutrients the body needs primarily from food.

Dietary supplements and synthetic vitamin preparations are characterized by high concentrations of vitamins and minerals, often significantly exceeding the body’s daily requirements. Their regular daily use can contribute to hypervitaminosis.

In natural foods, beneficial nutrients are generally present in relatively small amounts and are often combined with proteins, fiber, and other nutrients. During digestion, the gastrointestinal tract regulates the absorption of valuable substances from food, while excess amounts are naturally eliminated from the body.

The best natural sources of fat-soluble vitamins include oilseed grains, nuts and raw, natural oils made from them.
