The face is a woman’s calling card, and its beauty and attractiveness largely depend on regular, proper, and well-balanced skincare. An essential part of this routine is the oil serum for face. This product is included in nearly all premium cosmetic lines because it provides a wide range of positive effects. Facial oil serums moisturize and nourish the skin, prevent dehydration, and slow down age-related (degenerative) changes.

Natural oil-based skincare products are almost 100% organic, which makes them quite expensive. A great alternative is a DIY oil serum made from raw organic cold-pressed oils.

Oil serum vs. cosmetic face oil: what’s the difference?

Oil serum

Both facial oil serums and cosmetic oils are similar in composition and in how they affect the epidermis. However, serums typically contain more biologically active components and offer better absorption. An oil serum usually consists of a fast-absorbing carrier oil combined with several essential oils that enhance its benefits.

Face oils can sometimes replace a cream, while an oil serum is more universal — it can be used instead of a lotion or toner, as well as a makeup remover (including waterproof cosmetics).

DIY oil serum recipes for different skin types

One major advantage of making your own homemade serum for skin is the ability to customize it based on your individual needs.

Anti-wrinkle, firming and rejuvenating oil serum:

  • 5 g cold-pressed sunflower oil;
  • 5 g jojoba oil;
  • 3 drops vitamin E;
  • 3–4 drops rose essential oil;

Serum for reducing breakouts and oily shine:

  • 5 g raw black cumin (black seed) oil;
  • 5 g argan oil;
  • 7 drops lavender essential oil;
  • 3 drops vitamin E;

Optional: add 2–3 drops of tea tree or any conifer essential oil. These ingredients have drying, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties and help regulate sebum production.

Nourishing serum for dry and sensitive skin:

  • 5 g jojoba oil;
  • 5 g apricot kernel oil;
  • 2 g rice bran oil;
  • 4 drops vitamin E;
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil;

Vitamin E not only nourishes the skin but also slows oxidation of natural oils, which are «alive» and have a short shelf life.

How to use a facial oil serum

Using an oil serum for face is simple. To remove makeup apply a few drops to a cotton pad and gently wipe eyelids, cheeks, forehead, nose, and lips along massage lines.

For skincare once a day (morning or evening), apply 2–3 drops to clean skin, spread evenly, and let it absorb for 10–15 minutes. Blot any excess with a tissue.

An oil serum does not clog pores, allows the skin to “breathe,” and does not leave an unattractive greasy shine. It can even be used as a makeup primer.

The effectiveness of a natural face oil serum depends directly on the quality of the oils. The best base oils are raw, organic, cold-pressed options free from preservatives, fragrances, stabilizers, and other additives.
