Poor health and disruptions in the body are often not caused by diseases, but by deficiencies of essential nutrients required for proper metabolism and maintaining overall vitality.
Symptoms such as muscle weakness, dystrophy, reduced sensitivity in the limbs, vision problems (especially in low light), and dry, flaky skin often indicate a deficiency of alpha-tocopherol — a fat-soluble vitamin involved in many metabolic processes.
What is alpha-tocopherol?
Alpha-tocopherol is the most active form of vitamin E. It has powerful antioxidant properties, strengthens cell membranes, and helps protect the body from the harmful effects of free radicals. It also slows down aging processes, which is why it is often called the «vitamin of youth» in cosmetology.
In addition, alpha-tocopherol provides the following health benefits:
- Helps prevent blood clot formation and lowers levels of «bad» cholesterol, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, ischemia, and cardiovascular diseases;
- Plays a role in the production of estrogen and progesterone, supporting reproductive health in both men and women;
- Stimulates the production of immune cells, enhancing the body’s defense against bacteria and viruses;
- Participates in collagen synthesis, improving skin elasticity and regeneration after damage;
- Prevents hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) and improves oxygen delivery throughout the body, helping to avoid anemia, fatigue, dizziness and fainting;
How to prevent vitamin E deficiency
The best way to maintain adequate levels of alpha-tocopherol is by consuming foods rich in this nutrient. The top sources are vegetable oils, especially:
- Wheat germ oil (150 mg per 100 g);
- Sunflower oil (60 mg per 100 g);
- Sweet almond oil (39 mg per 100 g);
- Corn oil (30 mg per 100 g);
On average, the daily requirement of alpha-tocopherol can be met with 1–1.5 tablespoons of oil. These oils can be consumed on their own or added to salads, side dishes, sauces, and dressings. Some oils, such as sunflower and corn oil, have a high smoke point, making them suitable for frying, stewing, and baking.
However, when heated above 200°C (392°F), vitamin E begins to break down rapidly, losing its antioxidant properties. Therefore, if the goal is to replenish vitamin E levels, it is best to consume oils unheated.
Cold-pressed oils: the best source of vitamin E
Alpha-tocopherol, along with other vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids, is found only in unrefined (raw) vegetable oils. These oils are produced using cold-press extraction and are not subjected to heat or chemical processing. They can be purchased or made at home.
To produce your own oil, you need such as an oil press machine, a press barrel (mold), high-quality raw materials such as grains, seeds or nuts.
