Basil is one of the most well-known and widely used herbs, traditionally applied in cooking, home cosmetology, and alternative medicine. In 100 grams of fresh basil (or about 30 grams of dried basil leaves and stems), you will find:

  • Vitamins: C, K, A, B6, B9, P (rutin);
  • Minerals: iron, potassium, magnesium, copper, sodium, calcium;
  • Fiber (approximately 1.6 g);
  • Essential oils and bitter compounds;

Regular consumption of basil may help to support faster recovery from flu, colds, and upper respiratory tract infections, provide antiseptic and antibacterial effects due to its essential oils and offer mild vasoconstrictive properties.

In Italy, basil is also considered a natural aphrodisiac, believed to enhance libido and fertility.

Both Reyhan and Yerevan basil varieties are particularly rich in active vitamin A, which promotes regeneration of epithelial tissue damaged by respiratory diseases, supports skin cell growth and differentiation and helps maintain skin smoothness and elasticity.

The bitter compounds in basil positively affect the digestive system by stimulating gastric juice production and supporting bile thinning and flow.

How to use basil properly

Like any product, basil should be consumed in moderation: 10–15 fresh leaves per day, or up to 2 grams of dried basil daily.

This amount is enough to enhance the flavor and aroma of dishes while boosting their nutritional value. Add basil to hot dishes only a few minutes before they are ready. Prolonged heating weakens and eventually destroys its aroma.

Italian cuisine uses basil extensively. It is essential for pizza, pesto sauce and even some desserts. It is also added to cocktails such as Margarita and Mojito. One of the most popular Italian salads combines sliced tomatoes, cheese, and fresh basil, dressed with olive oil.

Basil is widely used in traditional medicine. For example, to relieve migraines: slowly chew one small fresh leaf or hold a pinch of dried basil in your mouth, then swallow with warm water, for nasal congestion: inhale steam from fresh basil shoots infused in boiling water and for stress relief: basil tea with ginger is considered a powerful calming remedy.

In skincare, adding fresh (crushed) or dried basil to face masks may help regulate oily skin, reduce comedones (blackheads).
