Frequent colds, flare-ups of chronic conditions, increased allergic reactions, and even a general decline in energy levels are all signs of a weakened immune system. There are many reasons for this: vitamin deficiencies, fatigue, stress, and more. To strengthen the body’s natural defenses, it is beneficial to regularly consume immune-supporting foods, one of which is turmeric – a popular bright-yellow spice with a neutral aroma and a distinctive «plant-like» flavor.
How turmeric affects the immune system
The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of turmeric were known as far back as 4,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptian papyri mention that it was sprinkled onto wounds to disinfect them and speed up healing. It was also consumed internally to help relieve «stomach ailments» and restore energy.
The immune-modulating properties of turmeric have been confirmed by studies conducted in India and the United States. The key active compound in this spice is an enzyme-like substance called curcumin. This highly active component helps regulate the activation of T cells, B cells, and natural killer cells of the immune system, which destroy bacteria and viruses.
In addition, curcumin stimulates the production of a special protein called BDNF, which promotes the growth of new neurons, thereby improving central nervous system function and reducing the risk of age-related brain disorders.
Besides curcumin, turmeric contains vitamin C (ascorbic acid) – a water-soluble compound that strengthens immunity not only through T-lymphocyte proliferation and phagocyte activation but also by stimulating interferon production. Interferon is a special protein synthesized by the human body when pathogenic microorganisms (cells and bacteria) enter it. It blocks their reproduction and suppresses their activity.
Turmeric also contains zinc, a mineral known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Zinc improves the functioning of the thymus gland, which produces T cells, and also accelerates the production of keratin – the body’s own natural collagen protein.
How to use turmeric to boost immunity
To support the body’s defense system, it is enough to consume ½–1 teaspoon of turmeric daily. It can be added to dough for savory or sweet baked goods (as a natural coloring agent), as well as to vegetable, legume, meat, or fish dishes.
It is also effective to add turmeric to smoothies and shakes based on dairy products, fruit juices, ground flax seeds, chia seeds, and other ingredients.
In Eastern cuisine, turmeric is traditionally added to rice dishes (including pilaf), while in Europe it is an essential ingredient in chicken marinades. One of the most popular Indian drinks is «golden milk» (turmeric latte). It is made with cow’s milk (or, less commonly, plant-based milk) combined with cinnamon, ground ginger root, cardamom, turmeric and black pepper. The pepper adds a spicy note and significantly improves the absorption of turmeric’s main active compound – curcumin.
For those who want not only to strengthen their immune system but also support natural detox processes, it is useful to add 1 teaspoon of turmeric and freshly squeezed lemon juice to 200 ml of water. This drink can be consumed on an empty stomach 10–15 minutes before the first meal.
