Why Choose a 3 kW Hydraulic Power Unit?
The motor power and pump delivery rate affect how quickly a hydraulic cylinder can complete its working stroke. For production environments where the equipment operates repeatedly throughout a shift, reducing cycle time can improve operator productivity.
The CraftOil 3 kW model delivers 2.8 L/min at the high-pressure stage, compared with 1.7 L/min for the specified 1.5 kW models and 0.9 L/min for the specified 0.75 kW models.

The times above are theoretical estimates calculated from the stated high-pressure flow rates and oil volumes. Actual cylinder movement depends on pressure, cylinder geometry, the effective volume of the relevant chamber, system losses and operating conditions. These figures are not guaranteed complete machine-cycle times.
For example, delivering 0.5 litres at the stated high-pressure flow rate takes approximately 11 seconds with the 3 kW unit, compared with approximately 18 seconds at 1.7 L/min.
Across dozens of repeated operations, differences in hydraulic delivery time can add up. For production lines and workshops where operator time and throughput matter, the higher-flow model may offer a practical advantage.
Double-Acting Hydraulic Circuit: Powered Extension and Retraction
This hydraulic power unit is designed for equipment using compatible double-acting hydraulic cylinders.
A double-acting cylinder has two hydraulic ports. Oil is directed alternately to the piston side and rod side of the cylinder to control movement in both directions.
The power unit uses two working lines, designated A and B, and a manual two-position directional valve to switch the hydraulic flow.
When Do You Need a Double-Acting Power Unit?
Choose a double-acting hydraulic power unit when:
-
Your cylinder has two hydraulic ports.
-
The cylinder must retract under hydraulic pressure rather than relying solely on a return spring or gravity.
-
You need controlled movement in both directions.
-
Your equipment requires a powered return stroke.
-
You operate compatible hydraulic presses, pipe benders, pullers or other machinery with double-acting cylinders.
Quick compatibility check: look at the cylinder. One hydraulic port often indicates a single-acting cylinder; two ports often indicate a double-acting cylinder. However, confirm the cylinder’s documentation and port functions before selecting the power unit.
If you are unsure, send CraftOil a photograph of the cylinder, its identification plate and hydraulic connections. We can help you assess compatibility before purchase.
Important: Check Your Electrical Supply Before Ordering
A 3 kW electric motor requires more electrical capacity than the 0.75 kW and 1.5 kW models. This should be checked before purchasing the unit.
The source specifications identify a 220 V single-phase supply and recommend a dedicated electrical line with a 20–25 A circuit breaker. The actual running current and starting current depend on the motor, power factor, efficiency, starting method and supply conditions.
Before installation:
-
Check the circuit capacity. Have a qualified electrician confirm that the supply, breaker and wiring are suitable for the motor and its starting current.
-
Use an appropriately rated cable. The required conductor size depends on the installation method, cable length, ambient temperature, voltage drop and applicable electrical regulations.
-
Avoid unsuitable extension leads. Underrated cables, cable reels and poor electrical connections can overheat or cause excessive voltage drop.
-
Check supply voltage under load. Low voltage can affect motor performance and increase overheating risk.
-
Ensure proper grounding. Protective earthing and electrical protection must comply with local regulations.
-
Verify the connector and control arrangement. The plug, socket, wiring and remote-control connection must be compatible with the actual unit.
A standard 16 A socket circuit shared with other equipment may be unsuitable for this model. Do not assume that a household outlet is adequate simply because the rated voltage is 220 V.
Our recommendation: tell us what electrical supply is available at your facility before ordering. CraftOil can help you determine whether the 3 kW model is appropriate or whether a lower-powered unit would be a better fit.
Final installation and circuit protection must be confirmed by a qualified electrician.
30 L Hydraulic Oil Tank: Capacity and Heat Management
The 30-litre reservoir provides an oil supply for compatible hydraulic equipment and helps manage oil temperature during operation. However, tank capacity alone does not guarantee continuous-duty performance.
Hydraulic Oil Volume
The oil available in the system must be sufficient for the connected cylinder and hydraulic circuit. A practical preliminary estimate is to allow approximately 20–30% more oil than the relevant working volume of the equipment, subject to the manufacturer’s requirements and the actual circuit design.
With a 30 L reservoir, a system with a working oil requirement of approximately 23–24 litres may be a reasonable preliminary sizing example. This is not a universal maximum: usable oil capacity depends on the reservoir’s permitted fill level, minimum operating level, return flow, cylinder geometry and the manufacturer’s specifications.
For double-acting cylinders, account for both chambers and the effective oil volume required during the complete operating cycle.
What About Oil Temperature?
A common preliminary sizing guideline is to consider a reservoir volume of approximately three to five times the pump’s nominal flow per minute. At 14 L/min, that guideline would suggest a reservoir of approximately 42–70 litres.
This is only a rule of thumb, not a mandatory design requirement. The suitability of a 30 L reservoir depends on the duty cycle, pressure profile, pump efficiency, ambient temperature, heat dissipation and whether the unit operates continuously or intermittently.
For short or intermittent cycles, a 30 L tank may be suitable. Under intensive, repeated or continuous operation, oil temperature must be monitored carefully.
Recommended practices:
-
Monitor oil temperature during intensive operation.
-
Avoid leaving the pump running unloaded longer than necessary.
-
Allow cooling breaks if the oil temperature exceeds the permitted operating range.
-
Consider a suitable oil cooler or heat exchanger for demanding duty cycles, following a technical assessment.
-
Use the hydraulic oil grade specified in the equipment manual.
Excessive oil temperature can accelerate oil degradation, reduce viscosity and shorten the service life of seals and hydraulic components.
CraftOil recommends assessing the actual operating cycle before using this unit for continuous production.

Pressure Gauge: 1,000 Bar Scale, 700 Bar Maximum Operating Pressure
The supplied glycerine-filled pressure gauge has a scale extending to 1,000 bar, while the hydraulic power unit’s specified maximum operating pressure is 700 bar.
These figures describe different things:
-
700 bar is the specified maximum operating pressure of the power unit.
-
1,000 bar is the upper limit of the pressure gauge’s scale.
A gauge with a higher scale limit can display the operating pressure within its range, but it does not increase the power unit’s pressure rating.
Glycerine dampens vibration and can make the gauge needle easier to read in environments with mechanical pulsation. Always observe the maximum permissible pressure of the power unit, hoses, fittings, valves and connected equipment. The lowest-rated component determines the safe system limit.
Remote Control for Convenient Operation
The remote control allows the operator to start and stop the power unit from the working position, subject to the supplied control configuration.
For high-pressure work, correct positioning and operator awareness are essential. The remote control does not replace safe operating procedures, suitable guarding or inspection of the hydraulic connections.
Before operating the unit, make sure the cylinder, hoses and fittings are correctly connected and rated for the intended pressure.

How to Choose the Right Hydraulic Power Unit
1. Does your cylinder have one or two hydraulic ports?
A compatible single-acting cylinder generally requires a single-acting power unit. A double-acting cylinder requires a suitable double-acting circuit with the correct valve and connections.
2. How frequently will the equipment operate?
For occasional operations, a lower-powered model may be sufficient. For frequent cycles where higher flow can reduce operating time, consider the 3 kW model.
3. What oil volume does the hydraulic equipment require?
Select the reservoir based on the actual circuit and cylinder requirements, including both chambers of a double-acting cylinder where applicable.
4. Is the electrical supply suitable?
The 3 kW model requires particular attention to the available electrical capacity and motor starting current. If a suitable dedicated supply is not available, consider a lower-powered model after assessing your requirements.
Compatibility with CraftOil Hydraulic Presses
CraftOil manufactures hydraulic presses in 30-tonne and 50-tonne configurations and works with hydraulic systems in its own production environment.
The correct power unit depends on the press’s hydraulic cylinder, operating pressure, flow requirements, circuit configuration and electrical supply. A higher-powered station is not automatically compatible with every press.
Before connecting this unit to a CraftOil press or third-party machine, verify:
-
Cylinder type and number of hydraulic ports.
-
Required working pressure and cylinder capacity.
-
Required oil flow and working volume.
-
Valve and quick-release coupling compatibility.
-
Hose pressure ratings.
-
Electrical supply and control requirements.
-
Permitted duty cycle and oil temperature limits.
Send CraftOil the equipment model or photographs of the cylinder identification plate and hydraulic connections. We can help you determine which power unit is appropriate for your application.
Recommended Hydraulic Oil
Use the hydraulic oil grade specified in the product manual. The source specifications indicate industrial hydraulic oils in the ISO VG 32 or ISO VG 46 viscosity classes, including compatible HLP 32/HLP 46 products and other approved equivalents. Do not assume that every listed oil is suitable for every operating temperature or application.
Before filling the reservoir:
-
Check the manual: confirm the approved oil type and viscosity.
-
Confirm the fill quantity: the tank has a nominal capacity of 30 litres, but the correct filling level must follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
-
Keep the oil clean: use suitable filtration equipment when filling.
-
Monitor temperature: intensive operation can increase oil temperature, particularly at high pump flow.
-
Follow maintenance intervals: inspect the oil regularly and replace it according to the manual and actual operating conditions.
-
Avoid mixing oils: do not mix different oil types or manufacturers’ products unless compatibility has been confirmed.
Contact CraftOil if you need help identifying an appropriate hydraulic oil for your working conditions.
Safety and Operation
Hydraulic systems operating at 700 bar require appropriate equipment, correct installation and trained operators.
-
Inspect hydraulic hoses and fittings before each use. Replace damaged, cracked, swollen or leaking components.
-
Confirm that lines A and B are connected to the correct ports before applying pressure.
-
Never disconnect a quick-release coupling while the system is pressurised.
-
Do not exceed the rated pressure of the power unit, cylinder, hoses, fittings or connected equipment.
-
Never search for a high-pressure oil leak with your hands. High-pressure fluid injection injuries can be severe.
-
Wear suitable eye protection and follow the equipment manufacturer’s safety procedures.
-
Ensure protective earthing and electrical protection are installed correctly.
-
Have a qualified electrician assess the power supply and circuit protection.
-
The unit weighs 51 kg. Use suitable lifting equipment or a safe team-lifting procedure.
-
Depressurise the system according to the manufacturer’s instructions before maintenance or disconnection.
The 1,000 bar gauge scale does not permit operation above the power unit’s specified 700 bar maximum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect the 3 kW hydraulic power unit to a standard 220 V outlet?
Not without first checking the circuit capacity. The supplied specifications recommend a dedicated line with 20–25 A protection. The motor’s actual running and starting current, cable size, breaker and connector must be assessed by a qualified electrician. A shared 16 A socket circuit may be unsuitable.
How much faster is the 3 kW model than the 1.5 kW version?
At the specified high-pressure stage, the 3 kW model delivers 2.8 L/min compared with 1.7 L/min for the 1.5 kW model. This is approximately 1.65 times the oil flow. Actual cylinder movement and complete cycle times depend on the cylinder and application.
Is this power unit suitable for a double-acting cylinder?
It is designed for compatible double-acting hydraulic equipment. Check that the cylinder, directional valve, A/B lines, couplings and pressure ratings match the unit. Do not rely solely on the number of ports to establish compatibility.
Is a 30 L reservoir sufficient at a pump flow rate of 14 L/min?
It may be suitable for certain applications, particularly intermittent cycles. Reservoir suitability depends on the duty cycle, heat generation, cylinder volume and system design. For intensive or continuous operation, monitor oil temperature and consider a technical assessment of cooling requirements.
What is the maximum hydraulic pressure?
The specified maximum operating pressure is 700 bar, equivalent to 70 MPa. The pressure gauge’s 1,000 bar scale does not increase the unit’s maximum operating pressure.
How much hydraulic oil is required?
The reservoir has a nominal capacity of 30 litres. The actual fill quantity depends on the permitted oil level and hydraulic circuit. Follow the product manual and confirm the correct oil grade before filling.
What hydraulic oil should I use?
The source specifications indicate ISO VG 32 or ISO VG 46 industrial hydraulic oil, including compatible HLP products. The exact grade must be confirmed against the product manual and operating conditions.
Does the package include hydraulic oil?
No. Hydraulic oil is not included in the standard package.
