Skin is the largest and one of the most important organs of the human body. Its condition directly affects appearance and overall well-being. Dry, dull, flaky skin may indicate a ceramide deficiency — lipids that act as essential «building blocks» of the upper skin layer.

What are ceramides?

Ceramides (also spelled ceramides, from the Latin cera — «wax») are a special type of lipid composed of sphingosine and a fatty acid. They are a vital component of cell membranes and play a key role in maintaining the skin barrier function.

Together with other lipids (especially cholesterol) and dead skin cells, ceramides form the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the skin. This layer protects the body from external aggressors such as pollution, UV radiation, and temperature changes, while also preventing moisture loss, which is essential for skin elasticity and firmness.

Approximately 50% of the skin’s lipid content consists of ceramides. A lack of ceramides can lead to increased dryness, irritation, tightness, sensitivity, and the appearance of what cosmetologists call a «parchment-like» skin texture.

As we age, the skin naturally produces fewer ceramides. Therefore, replenishing them is crucial for anti-aging skincare, maintaining healthy skin, and slowing down visible signs of aging.

Benefits of ceramides for the skin

According to Korean skincare experts, ceramides are also beneficial for dry, damaged, and brittle hair. They help restore the hair structure by «sealing» the cuticle scales, making hair smoother, shinier, and more resilient.

Natural sources of ceramides

Natural ceramides are found primarily in cold-pressed plant oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids (omega-3, omega-6), vitamins, minerals and biologically active compounds that support metabolic processes and overall skin health.

Ceramides are present in many vegetable oils, but their highest concentrations are found in the following:

  • Rice bran oil – rich in ceramides and vitamin E, which helps maintain optimal skin hydration and prevents excessive moisture loss. It also contains γ-oryzanol, a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from environmental stressors and slows down aging processes in the epidermis and dermis;
  • Hemp seed oil – contains alpha-linolenic, linoleic, and gamma-linolenic acids — key components involved in ceramide synthesis. Hemp oil is also rich in carotenoids and phytosterols. They strengthen cell membranes and protect the skin from UV radiation;
  • Sunflower oil – a valuable source of oleic and linoleic acids, essential «building materials» for ceramides. Linoleic acid helps bind the corneocytes (dead skin cells), while oleic acid regulates moisture levels in the dermis;
  • Jojoba oil – one of the best natural sources of ceramides. It contains up to 80% gadoleic acid, which enhances the penetration of vitamins and minerals into the skin. Jojoba oil is also rich in B vitamins. They support skin regeneration and collagen production, helping maintain skin firmness and elasticity;

Plant oils can be used in pure form, applied directly to clean, dry skin or added to skincare products such as creams, masks, lotions and balms. The frequency of use depends on age, skin type, and individual needs — hydration, nourishment, or barrier repair.
