Henna is a popular and well-known product obtained from a plant called Lawsonia inermis. It is mainly used for hair coloring, eyebrow tinting, and creating body art designs (mehndi). Colorless henna is made from the stems of the lawsonia plant and is used to strengthen hair follicles and normalize scalp oiliness.

Iranian henna

The roots (and less commonly the leaves) of this plant are used to produce a fatty oil known as Iranian henna oil (“Iranian dark henna leaf oil”) or East Nights henna oil (“East Nights”). In Eastern countries, it is considered one of the most effective natural beauty oils for maintaining healthy skin and hair.

Benefits of iranian henna oil

The value of this natural plant oil comes from its rich chemical composition and abundance of biologically active compounds. It contains:

  • Lawsone — an organic pigment that strengthens the hair structure, making hair smoother, shinier, and easier to manage. It works similarly to a natural hair conditioner;
  • Tannins — plant compounds with astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. They help heal small scratches and minor scalp damage while regulating sebum (skin oil) production;
  • Vitamin K — fat-soluble compounds (mainly K1 and K2) capable of penetrating the skin’s hydrolipid barrier, strengthening blood vessels and improving local blood circulation;

In addition, lawsonia oil contains natural esters that give it a delicate and pleasant aroma reminiscent of tea rose flowers mixed with freshly cut grass.

How to use raw lawsonia oil

Lawsonia oil is intended for external use only. Like other raw natural oils, it can be applied in its pure form or added to homemade masks and creams, as well as cosmetic products such as shampoos, hair conditioners, face creams, body lotions, and beauty fluids.

To reduce excessive scalp oiliness, it is recommended to massage the oil into the hair roots twice a week. After application, wear a shower cap and rinse the hair no earlier than 2 hours later. If the hair becomes oily very quickly, the oil treatment can be left overnight and washed out in the morning.

For oily or combination skin, apply henna oil to the face once a week, gently spreading it along the massage lines with your fingertips. After 20–25 minutes, blot the excess oil with a clean tissue without washing the face or applying cream or toner afterward.

How henna oil Is produced

Raw Iranian henna oil is produced using a cold-press extraction method from the roots and leaves of the lawsonia plant. Oil made only from the roots is colorless and almost odorless. When a mixture of roots and young shoots is pressed, the result is a dark brown oil with a rich aroma and a thick, viscous texture.

However, lawsonia is a highly heat-loving plant that grows mainly in North Africa and the Middle East. Raw henna oil is rarely found in regular stores or online marketplaces. Excellent and equally effective alternatives include natural organic oils made from sesame seeds, black cumin, flaxseed, and other oil-rich crops.

These oils can be produced at home using a specialized oil press, a press barrel (mold), and suitable raw materials such as seeds, grains, or nuts.
