Lemon is one of the most popular and well-known representatives of the vast citrus family. Due to its pronounced sour taste, it is rarely consumed on its own, but it is widely used in cooking, herbal medicine, home cosmetology and even Ayurvedic medicine.

Among other things, lemon is used to produce lemon essential oil — a thick, transparent substance with a strong, distinctive aroma that combines citrus and minty notes. This product has exceptional value for the human body, as it contains highly active compounds such as terpenes, esters, sesquiterpenes, and aldehydes, as well as antioxidants that help suppress inflammatory processes and protect against the harmful effects of free radicals.

Benefits of lemon essential oil

Lemon oil

Lemon oil can be used both internally and externally. It helps to:

  • Relieve nausea. In 2014, scientists conducted a randomized double-blind study involving 100 pregnant women suffering from toxicosis and/or gestosis. During episodes of nausea, participants inhaled lemon essential oil and reported rapid relief. Six years later, the experiment was repeated: women in the control group inhaled a blend of peppermint and lemon oils for 5–10 minutes daily. After 2–4 sessions, most participants reported a significant reduction in toxicosis symptoms;
  • Improve digestion. A study published in the medical journal Chemical and Biological Interactions in 2009 demonstrated the effectiveness of lemon essential oil in cases of gastritis and intestinal disorders. Laboratory rats that received lemon oil with food showed improved appetite, and post-mortem examinations revealed healing gastric ulcers;
  • Support weight control. Lemon essential oil contains D-limonene, a compound that slows the accumulation of visceral fat and helps prevent hyperlipidemia, commonly known as obesity;

External application of lemon oil for skin helps reduce freckles and pigmentation spots, normalize oily skin, and decrease dandruff formation. However, like other essential oils, it should never be applied to the skin in its pure form, as it may cause irritation.

For lemon oil for hair, face, or body care, it is recommended to mix any carrier oil with 2–3 drops of lemon essential oil.

How to make lemon oil at home

In industrial settings, lemon essential oil is produced using steam distillation. At home, homemade lemon oil can be prepared through infusion. All you need is a carrier oil and fresh lemons. For 200 grams of base oil, you will need 2–3 medium-sized fruits.

Wash the lemons thoroughly under running water, pour boiling water over them, then peel the zest and grate it finely or blend it. Pour the carrier oil over the zest, shake well, and store the mixture in a cool, dark place for 2–2.5 weeks. Once ready, strain the oil and store it in a tightly sealed container in the main compartment of the refrigerator.

Naturally, the quality of the carrier oil directly affects the benefits of the final product. The best base oils are fresh, raw, cold-pressed oils. To make them at home, you only need an oil press, a special barrel (press mold), and raw materials such as nuts or oil-bearing seeds (for example, flax, sunflower, edible hemp, etc.).
