Today, dozens of plant-based oils are widely used in cooking, folk medicine, aromatherapy, and cosmetology. Each type of oil boasts a rich vitamin and mineral profile, along with numerous health benefits. It’s impossible to claim that one oil is better than another, since every natural oil has unique value for the human body.

One of the lesser-known yet incredibly beneficial products is dandelion root oil. This rare oil has remarkable healing properties that may help relieve muscle and joint pain, as well as address many skin conditions — including eczema and psoriasis.

Composition and health benefits of dandelion root oil

Dandelion oil

Dandelion root oil is rich in bioactive compounds essential for overall wellness. It contains:

  • Vitamins E, A, and C (ascorbic acid);
  • Minerals such as iron, potassium, and magnesium;
  • Triterpenes;
  • Phytosterols (β-sitosterol, stigmasterol);
  • Inulin (a natural prebiotic);
  • Taraxacin (a bitter compound);

Internal use of dandelion root oil helps improve digestion, balance gut microbiota, and stimulate intestinal motility. Triterpenes support immune function, reduce stress, and have a positive impact on the central nervous system and brain.

Taraxacin enhances stomach function, regulates gastric acidity, and promotes better food digestion.

External use of dandelion oil can reduce itching, burning, and redness caused by eczema, ease skin flaking during psoriasis flare-ups, and lower the risk of psoriatic arthritis, a connective tissue inflammation in joints that cannot be fully cured.

How to make dandelion root oil at home

Dandelion roots themselves contain no fat, so the oil is obtained by infusion (maceration). Ideally, roots should be harvested at the end of summer or early autumn, thoroughly washed, and dried.

The roots are then finely grated or blended and infused in a carrier oil. The mixture should rest in a cool, dark place for 2–2.5 weeks. For every 100 g of base oil, use about 50 g of crushed root.

A similar method can be used with dandelion flowers, but their healing properties are weaker compared to root-infused oil.

The quality of the base oil largely determines the therapeutic value of the finished product. For the best results, use raw, 100% natural vegetable oil — whether purchased or homemade. To produce your own oil at home, you’ll need an oil press and a pressing mold (made of wood or polymer).
