Not only health and wellness enthusiasts but also people who take a careful approach to their health often wonder how sugar affects the body and, in particular, whether it may increase the risk of developing tumors. It has long been known that excessive sugar consumption can harm dental health and contribute to obesity. However, the relationship between sugar and cancer, as well as other benign and malignant tumors, has been the subject of considerable debate until relatively recently.

Is there a link between sugar consumption and tumor development? What scientists say

Sweet food

One of the largest and most widely cited studies investigating the potential relationship between sugar consumption and cancer development is the French NutriNet-Santé study, with its findings published in the scientific journal The BMJ.

Researchers followed more than 100,000 adult men and women for several years and reported the following findings:

Increasing daily consumption of sugary drinks by 100 ml was associated with an 18% higher risk of developing cancer;

Regular daily consumption of foods containing added sugar, as well as natural fruit and berry juices, was associated with a 51% higher risk of breast cancer, particularly among postmenopausal women;

Importantly, these associations were also observed in people without excess body weight, cardiovascular problems, or other health conditions that may affect cancer risk.

Researchers from South Korea, together with colleagues from the United States, conducted a series of studies suggesting that excessive consumption of sugary soft drinks, candy, milk chocolate, and other desserts may increase the risk of colorectal cancer by 51% and may also contribute to the development of stomach tumors.

South Korean scientists found that excessive glucose levels in the body can activate the production of a specific protein known as HSF1. Among other functions, this protein can help cancer-altered cells resemble healthy cells, making them less visible to the immune system. This may be one of the reasons why cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Their findings were published in the National Library of Medicine.

The findings described above primarily concern excessive sugar consumption. The recommended daily intake of sugar for an adult is generally around 25–50 grams, depending on individual factors. It is also important to consider not only granulated sugar added to foods and beverages but also naturally occurring sugars found in fresh fruits, berries, and some vegetables.

How to reduce the risk of tumor development

To help reduce the risk of developing tumors, including cancer, it is important to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet. This includes consuming approximately 400 grams of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, as well as 20–25 grams of grains, seeds, or nuts.

Plant-based foods are rich in dietary fiber and polyphenols — unique compounds known for their antioxidant properties. They can help neutralize reactive oxygen species that may damage cellular DNA and contribute to carcinogenesis, the process through which healthy cells can become cancerous.

In addition, polyphenols may support the production of liver enzymes involved in the body’s natural detoxification processes.

ЇOne particularly rich source of these compounds is fresh, raw flaxseed. It can be consumed on its own with sufficient fluid or crash and added to yogurt, kefir, fermented baked milk, as well as savory and sweet baked goods, salads and other dishes.
