Shilajit (also known as Mumijo, mountain resin, or mountain wax) is a highly beneficial and popular natural remedy that, unfortunately, has been unfairly forgotten in recent times. There are many legends about its origin. Some claim it is fossilized bat droppings, while others believe it is a type of natural petroleum. Both theories sound quite fantastic.

Today, scientists mostly agree that Shilajit is the result of plant matter fermented by bees thousands of years ago. However, there is still no single proven version of its origin. Regardless of where it comes from, the value of this substance for the human body is undeniable.

Historical facts about shilajit

It is unclear who was the first to use Shilajit for medicinal or cosmetic purposes. Yet, ancient Greek and Indian medical texts contain descriptions of healing remedies made from it. One manuscript even states that there is no human disease that Shilajit could not cure.

Shilajit is known by various names: mountain resin, mountain wax, Shilajit (in India), Al-Mumiyo, and Mumijo Asil. The name comes from the ancient Persian word mum, which literally means “wax”.

Health benefits of mountain resin

Natural Mumijo

Shilajit or mountain wax is a unique natural product with a rich physical and chemical composition. It contains more than 50 organic substances, including:

  • Amino acids;
  • Micro- and macroelements (such as manganese, calcium, and iron);
  • Fatty acids (including omega);
  • Vitamins;
  • Alcohol compounds;
  • Resinous substances;
  • Albumins (involved in plasma protein synthesis);
  • Terpenoids, steroids;
  • Hippuric and benzoic acids;

One of the oldest uses of Shilajit was to speed up bone healing and muscle or ligament recovery. People made compresses and rubs from it to promote faster regeneration.

Later, it was used for indigestion and skin rashes. Its weak solution acts similarly to a diluted potassium permanganate solution.

Today, Shilajit is valued for these beneficial properties:

  • Strengthens the immune system (due to its high content of adaptogens – bioactive compounds that help the body respond faster to external threats);
  • Normalizes gut microflora (thanks to its bactericidal effect);
  • Eases breathing and helps remove phlegm from the upper respiratory tract (due to resins and manganese);
  • Soothes the skin, reduces irritation and swelling of various origins;
  • Reduces joint inflammation (helpful for arthritis, arthrosis, sciatica, etc.);

How to use shilajit safely

Shilajit is available in tablets, powder, or small pressed blocks. It is a highly active substance and must be taken internally with great care. The standard dosage is 3 grams dissolved in 3 liters of warm water and infused for 24 hours. This solution is taken in 200 ml portions at least 40 minutes before meals. It can also be applied to inflamed or irritated skin or used for inhalation therapy.

A typical course of Shilajit treatment lasts 10 days. If necessary, it can be extended to 2 weeks.

It’s important to note that while Shilajit is beneficial, its high concentration of active components can pose risks if not used properly. It’s crucial to follow dosage and administration rules strictly. A safer but no less effective alternative is raw plant oils.
