Preparing a beehive for a new bee colony is a very important and responsible task. The health and well-being of the bees that will live in it largely depend on proper hive preparation. A dry, clean, and fully equipped «home» helps a bee swarm or a package of bees adapt more quickly and start collecting nectar and producing honey.

The preparation work before introducing bees depends on several factors, including:

  • The material the beehive is made of;
  • Whether the hive is new or previously used. If bees are going to be introduced into a used hive, it must be properly disinfected. The appropriate disinfection method depends on why the hive was taken out of use. For example, if the previous bee colony died from varroa mites (varroosis), the hive should be thoroughly ventilated for about a month. If the colony died from American foulbrood, European foulbrood, nosematosis, or other infectious diseases, a polyurethane foam (PPU) hive should be treated with a weak solution of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), while a wooden hive can be treated with a blowtorch or gas burner;

What is important when preparing a beehive for bees

A beehive before being populated with bees

A used beehive must be thoroughly cleaned and carefully inspected for cracks, gaps, and other defects. Any problems should be repaired so that the bees can maintain an optimal microclimate inside the hive.

The hive roof and entrances require particular attention because they protect the colony from precipitation, drafts, and pests such as mice, wasps, ants, and others.

Both new and used beehives should be painted. In addition to improving moisture resistance and extending the service life of the hive, its color helps bees recognize and navigate to their home. Bees do not distinguish red, green, and many other colors well, but they respond well to yellow, white, and blue. Therefore, it is advisable to paint the hive in one of these colors.

Painting is especially important if you plan to introduce an unmated queen, as she needs to easily identify her hive when returning from a mating flight and avoid entering a neighboring colony.

The choice of paint depends on the material of the beehive. Wooden hives can be painted with oil-based, acrylic, or acrylate paints. For polymer hives, rubber-based paints or water-based exterior paints are suitable because they do not damage or dissolve the hive walls.

The next step is to equip the hive. Several frames with drawn comb should be installed, alternating them with frames containing foundation, which provides the base for the bees to build new comb.

The number of frames depends on the size of the bee swarm or the number of bees in the package being introduced into the hive.

If the weather is cool, the hive should be insulated before introducing the bees. Special insulation cushions and follower boards (division boards) can be used for this purpose.

Polyurethane foam (PPU) beehives have excellent thermal insulation properties, so they generally require little or no additional insulation. Proper ventilation is usually sufficient to prevent excessive condensation from accumulating inside the hive.
