What are ceramides?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ceramides (also spelled ceramides, from the Latin cera \u2014 \u00abwax\u00bb) are a special type of lipid composed of sphingosine and a fatty acid. They are a vital component of cell membranes and play a key role in maintaining the skin barrier function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with other lipids (especially cholesterol) and dead skin cells, ceramides form the stratum corneum \u2014 the outermost layer of the skin. This layer protects the body from external aggressors such as pollution, UV radiation, and temperature changes, while also preventing moisture loss, which is essential for skin elasticity and firmness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Approximately 50% of the skin\u2019s lipid content consists of ceramides. A lack of ceramides can lead to increased dryness, irritation, tightness, sensitivity, and the appearance of what cosmetologists call a \u00abparchment-like\u00bb skin texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we age, the skin naturally produces fewer ceramides. Therefore, replenishing them is crucial for anti-aging skincare, maintaining healthy skin, and slowing down visible signs of aging.<\/p>\n\n\n
