Carrots are not only a versatile but also a very nutritious vegetable. Rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C, B vitamins, fiber, and a variety of minerals, carrots support healthy digestion, strengthen the immune system, improve skin condition, and promote good vision.

Carrots are commonly used in soups, stews, salads, and even baked into carrot cakes. But if you’re a fan of healthy, low-calorie desserts, try making carrot candied snacks. These treats are perfect for kids who usually refuse to eat raw vegetables, turning a simple root into a delicious and fun alternative.

Classic recipe for carrot candied snacks

Carrot candied snacks

You can use almost any type of carrot to make candied carrot sticks. The main requirement is that they’re fresh, firm, and not too fibrous. Ideally, use carrots that have been stored in the fridge for no longer than two days.

Ingredients for 2–3 servings:

  • 2 kg of carrots;
  • 2 liters of water;
  • 4–5 tablespoons of sugar;
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon (optional);

Wash the carrots under running water, peel them, and let them dry slightly. Then cut them into sticks no longer than 5 cm.

In a pot, combine water, sugar, and cinnamon. Bring the syrup to a boil and then add the carrot sticks. Cook over medium heat for 9–10 minutes. Remove the carrots and place them in a single layer on a drying tray.

For extra flavor, you can add orange zest to the syrup – this gives your snacks a zesty twist and enhances their aroma. If desired, sprinkle the carrots with additional cinnamon before drying.

Dry the candied carrot sticks in an electric dehydrator at 60–70°C (140–158°F) for 7–8 hours. Drying time may vary depending on the carrot’s moisture and density. The snacks are ready when they develop a slightly crispy outer layer and can be easily removed from the tray without breaking.

Before serving, you can drizzle them with honey or dust with powdered sugar. Store the finished snack in a cool place (such as a regular fridge compartment) for up to 3 months. Like all natural products, they have a limited shelf life.

Although it’s technically possible to make candied carrots in a conventional oven, an electric dehydrator is far more convenient. With temperature control and a timer, it eliminates the need for constant monitoring.

Plus, gas ovens should never be left unattended for long periods, making them less suitable for extended drying tasks.
