Summer often brings to mind fresh seasonal fruits, relaxing by the water — and, unfortunately, annoying and sometimes unbearable insects like mosquitoes, gnats, and ticks. While pharmacy or cosmetic insect repellents (sprays, gels, ointments) are commonly used to keep bugs away, there’s a safe, effective natural alternative: essential oils.

Unlike chemical repellents, natural essential oils are plant-based, generally well-tolerated, and rarely cause allergic reactions or skin irritation. They’re a safe solution for both adults and children.

Repellent properties of essential oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts rich in active compounds like menthol, camphor, citral, thymol, linalool, and eucalyptol. These give the oils a strong scent that repels insects by disrupting their nervous system and disorienting their sense of smell. In many cases, this leads to paralysis or even death.

When an insect like a flea, mosquito, or fly inhales these oils, it loses the ability to detect prey and may itself fall victim to birds or insectivorous animals.

Best essential oils that repel insects

Repellent oils

While many essential oils naturally repel bugs (as a result of evolutionary plant defense), the following are especially effective natural insect repellents:

  • Citronella oil – particularly effective against mosquitoes and gnats;
  • Clove oil – repels ticks and spiders;
  • Eucalyptus oil – a universal insect repellent;
  • Chrysanthemum oil – drives away flies;
  • Tea tree oil – effective against mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks;
  • Vanilla oil – repels ticks and sand fleas;

Other oils that repel a wide variety of insects include geranium, lemon, cedar, lavender, and peppermint oils. Peppermint and lemon balm oils are especially useful against ants, as they mask the pheromone trails used for navigation.

How to Use Essential Oils for Bug Protection

You can use one or a combination of essential oils to keep insects at bay. However, due to their high concentration, they should never be applied directly to the skin without dilution. Mix them with carrier oils or create your own DIY bug spray.

An alcohol-based spray is easy to make at home and works well as a short-term repellent. Here’s how:

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of alcohol (vodka or rubbing alcohol) with 4–5 tablespoons of water;
  • Add 10 drops of your chosen essential oil (or a blend);
  • Shake well and pour into a spray bottle.;

The effect typically lasts up to 2 hours, so reapplication is needed.

An oil-based repellent provides longer protection. Mix 20–40 drops of essential oil into 100 ml of a carrier oil, such as: camelina oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, pumpkin seed oil.  Apply to exposed skin: neck, wrists, ankles, etc. The effectiveness depends on oil quality and concentration.

Some carrier oils themselves are insect-repelling. Black seed oil (Nigella sativa) is one of the most effective and gentle options. Its smell deters mosquitoes, gnats, flies, fleas, and even lice. A perfect choice for sensitive skin and children.
